Nayib Bukele is a politician and businessman from El Salvador. Since June 1, 2019, he has been the President of El Salvador. From May 1, 2012, until April 30, 2015, he served as Mayor of Nuevo Cuscatlán, and from May 1, 2015, to April 30, 2018, he served as Mayor of San Salvador.

During Bukele’s presidency, El Salvador’s homicide rate fell to historic lows, dropping by more than half in his first year in office.

Despite Bukele’s claims that the drop in killings was due to his deployment of thousands of police and troops to gang strongholds and increased jail security, the US has accused his government of secretly working with Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) to minimize the number of murders.

The politician is also the founder of the Nuevas Ideas political party (NI).
